Attendees were treated to a morning of insights into the fashion media world at the Condé Nast College, London, thanks to a partnership with the Mayor’s Fund for London and its Access Aspiration programme.
About Access Aspiration
Access Aspiration supports 16 to 18-year-olds from schools in boroughs with high numbers of low-income families and underrepresented backgrounds. They’re given opportunities to gain work experience, take mock interviews and CV workshops, and meet the world of work in specially organised events.
The Vogue Experience
The event was hosted and designed by Senior Lecturer in Fashion Media, Hannah Shakir, with a guest talk from BA (Hons) Fashion Communication College alumna, Olivia Lower, Social Media Manager for Vogue.
Hannah said, “I thoroughly enjoyed designing and delivering the Vogue Experience morning for the young people involved with the Mayor’s Fund for London programme. Widening participation in fashion is something we truly believe in to welcome diverse perspectives into the fashion industry. Knowing what options are out there can have a big impact on a young person’s academic and career journey, so shining a light on the vast breadth of careers in the fashion industry is key to what we do at Condé Nast College.”
Students came to the College’s Bedford Square campus to hear a lecture on the fashion media landscape before taking a closer look at fashion photography and editorials They learned how photoshoots are planned and executed and the role they play in fashion media for both print and digital platforms. Students were then asked to come up with their fashion shoot concepts creating mood boards to communicate their ideas. The morning was wrapped up by Zoe Souter, Head of Careers and Stakeholder Engagement at the College, giving a talk on the variety of careers available in the fashion industry.
“It was fantastic, and it has just made me appreciate fashion journalism even more, only fuelling my passion further.”
The Condé Nast College Experience
Harmony Brown-Ali was one of the students who took part, and she said, “Thinking back on Condé Nast College of Fashion and Design Insight Day, I’m reminded that publishing is a dynamic dance involving innovation, flexibility, and teamwork. I am more motivated than ever to enter the
field. The day was an assortment of insights that provided a thorough overview of the publishing industry, and I would heartily endorse it to everyone. It was fantastic, and it has just made me appreciate fashion journalism even more, only fuelling my passion further.”
Staff who took part in the morning session were impressed by their visitors, as Zoe Souter explains. “They had great ideas and were an engaged group of creatives. It was a pleasure to share our knowledge and insight into the fashion industry with them. A number of them took up my offer to get in touch after the event, and they have a bright future in fashion.”
