Being a designer isn’t the only way to work in fashion. There are a huge number of roles that are vital to keeping the industry running – many of which you might not even have known existed, such as branding and merchandising, ecommerce, public relations, strategy and trend forecasting, to name but a few. Whatever your skill set, there are opportunities. Here are our tips for taking your first steps into the fashion business.
Be In the Know
In order to succeed in the industry, it’s vital to stay informed. Whether it’s Balenciaga, JW Anderson or Rejina Pyo, follow the brands you love on social media and stay curious about emerging new labels. Watch fashion shows in real time, read as much as you can on industry sites such as The Business of Fashion and Vogue Business – and have opinions.
Develop Your Skills
We’re all different – and in fashion, that’s a great thing. As there are such a wide variety of roles within the industry, employers are seeking an equally wide variety of skills.
That said, digital, video and social media skills are always sought after, in addition to more general ones such as adaptability, communication, problem-solving, and the ability to work in a team. Our courses can help you brush up on new skills.
Get Qualified
It is possible to work in fashion without a degree, but a BA or Master’s degree in a related subject is a massive advantage. Courses such as our BA (Hons) Fashion Communication & Industry Practice undergraduate degree, MA Luxury Brand Strategy & Business, MA Fashion Media Strategy or MA Entrepreneurship: Fashion & Creative Industries are highly regarded across the industry.
Have An Industry Connection
Connections matter. As with all Vogue College courses, our 5 Days of Fashion Business course provides students with direct access to the industry, including high-profile speakers.
This intensive five-day course provides an expert introduction to the commercial side of fashion, while also connecting you with useful contacts and opportunities to support your next steps.
Get Experience
Whether it’s a paid internship or your own project, experience is key to getting your foot in the door. Keep an eye open for opportunities on job-listings sites, and don’t be afraid to network.
Our careers experts can offer skills-training, support and guidance on all aspects of securing that dream job.
