As an aspiring stylist and sustainability advocate, she brought together her interests to create a program where she puts together personalised monthly clothing subscription boxes using thrifted and secondhand clothing for other teenagers. On top of that, she used her experience and the skills she learned during the summer to secure an internship at a showroom in LA.
We caught up with her to learn more about her experience at Vogue Summer School and what she’s done since summer.
Q: If you had to describe your experience with Vogue Summer School in one word, what would it be?
A: Fortunate. That would be the word to describe my experience with VSS. I am super fortunate to have had the experience I had. I will always keep what I learned with me, and I’ll never forget the memories. The opportunity to work with industry experts at VSS and experience New York with people sharing my passion, made last summer a launching point for my future career.
Q: What was your most memorable moment during Vogue Summer School?
A: During my studies at VSS my classmates and I had the privilege to go to the Vogue Office, Vogue Studio, and THE Anna Wintour’s office!! I can still remember to this day how I felt at that very moment.
Q: What have you learned during your studies that have stuck with you?
A: My teacher Ben Perreira said, “Always be delusional, a lot of people will say no, and that ‘yes’ will be worth reaching out.”.
Q: What are you doing now? What projects are you taking on? Are there any career paths you’re considering or thinking about after VSS?
A: As soon as I got home from VSS in New York, I had the pleasure to be an intern at Hasson Costa, a showroom in downtown LA. Dusty Costa, the owner, was a pleasure to work with and gave me insights into their world.
I am also working at an after-school program, My Club. My Club provides a safe space for students to come to after school. I was lucky enough to start up a new program under My Club, called MY Closet Box.
MY Closet Box is a monthly clothing subscription box, except MY Closet Box is solely uses donated secondhand clothes. Two days out of the week, I put together boxes with some other students from the program based on personal surveys that we send out to the recipient students in advance. We make sure that their box reflects them and their style. The finished boxes are then delivered to those students, and we ask that they return the box and any items that either don’t fit or aren’t their style. This allows us to help people and the planet at the same time and ensure there’s no waste.
I am aspiring to be a fashion stylist, specifically working on photoshoots for brands, so putting together this program has been an opportunity to see my ideas come to life and explore styling for other people.
Q: Do you have any advice for future Vogue Summer School students?
A: My advice for future VSS students would be to keep your head up! Life can throw some tough curveballs at us, and never let those bring you down. Take your time and push through. It’s all worth it in the end, even the times that seem like you’re heading in the wrong direction.
